Welcome to the Global Network of SIETAR !
With more than 3,000 members, the Society for Intercultural Education, Training and Research is the world's largest interdisciplinary network for students and professionals working in the field of intercultural communication.
The main purpose of SIETAR is to encourage and support the development and application of values, knowledge and skills that promote and reinforce beneficial and long-lasting intercultural and inter-ethnic relations at the individual, group, organization and community levels.
SIETAR members view the world as a set of interdependent people and cultures which are equal in value and offer a variety of perspectives and approaches to living and working in a global community. The main purpose behind our efforts is to increase acceptance and respect among and within cultural groups, thereby paving the way for world peace.
SIETAR is affiliated with the Council of Europe and holds Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) status with the United Nations. Our members can attend the annual UN-NGO conference taking place each fall in New York city and voice their opinion on the international scene.
SIETAR was founded in the United States in 1974 by a few dedicated professionals. It rapidly grew outside its American borders, attracting hundreds of members throughout the world, and was later renamed SIETAR International.
SIETAR Europa was founded in 1991 and now encompasses national SIETAR groups in Germany, the UK, France, the Netherlands, and more recently Austria. It also includes members in many other European countries.
Towards the end of 1999, it was decided to disband the SIETAR International organization and instead rely on a global network of regional and local SIETAR groups. An administrative 'hub' has been created to coordinate activities common to all groups but there is no longer a single umbrella organization setting directions and guidelines for other entities. A Management Team, comprised of representatives from several groups, takes care of the interests of the Society.
In addition to the groups mentioned in Europe, SIETAR has active representation in the US through its main organization (SIETAR-USA) and a few independent local groups: Austin, Houston, New York and Washington D.C. It is also active in Calgary and British Columbia (Canada), Indonesia and Japan.
In addition to these region-, country- or city-based groups, Young SIETAR offers students and young professionals across the globe a forum to share ideas and discuss issues of interest.
We invite you to discover or join one of these groups. If you are not close geographically to any of them, you may want to consider the possibility of becoming an Associate Member of SIETAR.
